VOP GOES PLACES: Oma Vintge Cocktail Party and Sale

Last Thrusday, my best friend and fellow photographer for the evening, Jessica and I took a break from the stresses of final exams and stopped by Oma Vintage for the holiday cocktail party. There were treats, drinks and also, a great sale. I found the cutest white belt. I'm thinking about pairing it with some strappy sandals and a baby doll dress circa 1991. Thanks Oma!

The treats.

The people.

What a Very Vintage Time of Year

This is not just my holiday and birthday (my birthday is on Christmas!) wish list. This is my wish list for the month, year, decade, and lifetime. These local sellers in a word, amaze me and I want just about everything in their shops. Their items are great ideas for holiday presents.

Instead of the hustle and bustle that major department stores like Macy's or Bloomingdale's can bring during this time, considering buying from a local artist. Guaranteed, the pieces you buy will be much more special because they are one of a kind.

But you have to act swiftly, because the holidays are right on our door step and many of the sales these sellers are offering will be over soon. You don't want to miss out.

1. Mouse Trap Vintage - City Mouse Pins

Source: Mouse Trap Vintage

These pins are so adorable and can add a pinch of whimsy to any outfit. Mouse Trap Vintage is also having a holiday last chance sale where all sale items are buy one and get one for 50% off.

2. The Black Spot Books - Hand-bound Book Necklace

Source: The Black Spot Books

These darling necklaces are just some of the wonderful handcrafted treasures this seller offers. She uses old things like medical journals and catalogs to make new things like the mini journal necklaces seen above. She also sells prints and has a sale on them through the end of the year (look at the shop announcements for more details).

3. Hinterland Vintage - Vintage Christian Dior Blazer

Source: Hinterland Vintage

Blazers are kind of my thing. This blazer is gorgeous. The deep saturated plum can easily be dressed up or down. Today is the 11th day of Hinterland's 12 Days of Vintage sale, where you can get free domestic shipping.

4. Greatest Friend Vintage - Brown Vintage Oxfords

Source: Greatest Friend

I have a love affair with Oxfords. They are simple but sexy, sassy and chic. These ones look like they are in great condition. Greatest Friend has a variety of beautiful vintage pieces. Look around.

My Cheap Solution to the Holidays

Credit: Lyptonvillage.org

I am a college student. And when you are a college student the holidays can be depressing. It's not because we academic scholars are so jaded, pretentious and pessimistic that we are indifferent to the season, no! We love December and all the winter festivities that come along with this month just as much as the next person. However, there is one aspect of the holiday season that can be daunting for us...gift shopping. Most college students do not make much or any money, which can make shopping frugally for loved ones nearly impossible.

Credit: Mediaeater

This is my solution to the holiday haze that is buying gifts on a budget. I got the idea from a post by one of my favorite vintage sellers and bloggers, the lovely Miss James of Bleubird Vintage. I am buying everyone a vinyl record. Genius right? Thanks James!

Source: Soundstagedirect.com

Even if they don't have a record player, a lot of people value vinyl. It gives a feeling nostalgia, a sense of history, an aura of authenticity. Not to mention, you can find some for really cheap, that is if you know how and where to look. Thrift stores and flea markets are ideal because you can find really cool records that are crazy inexpensive. If you want, start at a local record store that sells vinyl records. You can also look online at places like Ebay, Amazon, and Etsy, but you also have to factor in shipping costs.

James says in her post to make sure you really give the record a good looksie before you buy it. Make sure there aren't any scratches or warping and check to see that the actual record matches the jacket.

*And if you want to buy your loved ones something to play that record on, here are some places you can find record players (prices range):

MY VINTAGEonPHILLY

Chesney Davis, North Philadelphia

www.phillyvintage.blogspot.com

I bought this beautiful scarf at a cute new thrift store right near Temple University's campus at Oxford and 11 Sts. It was only $5. It still had the original tags on it. It is tan and burgundy with green and gold embroidered and beaded accents.
______________________________________

So, I have this idea. I love sharing photos and information about my shopping adventures and the events that I go to but I would love to hear about all of your Philly vintage experiences. So I came up with an easy, user generated way for all of your to share your love of vintage in this city with me and with each other. If you are interested, follow the directions below or copy the format above:

1. Send me a picture of you and one of your favorite vintage items you have found in Philadelphia or the surrounding areas. Even though I blog mostly about clothes, your item can be anything.

2. Include your first name (or whatever name you're comfortable giving) and where you live.

3. If your piece has an interesting story, give a little 50-100 word anecdote about it.
Or just tell me why you love it.

4. If you are a seller and/or have blog or have a website and would like to share information on getting in touch with you, feel free.

If you are interested, please email the above information to phillyvintage.com@gmail.com. In the subject line please put "My Phintage Submission". Please give me up to 24 hours to respond to your email letting you know I have received it.

I will be posting 3 to 4 items per week, so if you do not see your submission right away, don't worry it will be included unless otherwise noted. Hopefully, I will be able to get enough submissions to make one of these posts every week.
Let's do this!

EVENT: Oma Vintage Holiday Party

I blogged about Oma Vintage a while back when Phintage was in it's first stages. It was the first (and as of now only) of my "Philly Vintage Dot Com" posts about local sellers who sell online. The topic, Ada Egloff's Etsy store Lollycrisp Vintage.

Now, Oma is having a holiday cocktail party and sale on December 17th at the boutique in Northern Liberties (716 N. 3rd St., Philadelphia, PA). Go, pop champagne, and buy some pretty things.

Some Updates...

Source: Black and Brown Vintage

I thought I would share probably my favorite vintage buy this year (that's not me in the picture, my camera is on the fritz and she rocked it a lot better than me anyway). It is a abstract, double breasted 80's leather jacket. I bought it from a great little seller on Etsy called Black and Brown Vintage, based in San Jose, California. It's sexy and chic and literally goes with anything; skinny jeans, a flowy baby doll dress, tights and cut off shorts...anything! Right now, I'm wearing it with my emo Yoda Star Wars black tee, gray jeans and chucks.

In other news, I am planning a chat with Deidre from a great new shop on Etsy called Hinterland Vintage. Just a little over two months old and already making impressive gains in the Philly vintage community. Right now she is having a holiday sale entitled "12 Days of Vintage Deals". She also blogs. Look out for the Hinterland feature, right here at Phintage.

Oh, and Sammy Davis from Sammy Davis Vintage, was featured on the Full Frontal Fashion blog on the Sundance Channel website. The Q&A covers Sammy's decision to leave a fancy job with Hearst to dedicate herself full time to her vintage line, what it has been like so far and what the future holds for this ambitious and creative ball of fire. Check it out.

VOP GOES PLACES: Philly Indie Craft Market

This past Saturday Philly Indie Craft Market at 2424 Studios in Fishtown."Craft Party" may be a more appropriate term because, considering the blistering cold and heavy snowy rain that day, there was a hefty turnout of people ready to have fun. Over thrity vendors were selling handmade, one of kind crafts, art and clothes. This event was a big effort to get as many donations as possible to help the 941 Theater (where the event is usually held) reopen.
____________________________________________________

The 941 Theater had its very own table with bake sale treats and raffle tickets.

A $5 donation got you a picture with good old St. Nick himself.

Pasbt Blue Ribbon sponsored the drinks, which most definitely did not go to waste.

Some well known bands from the area came out and provided amazing live music. One of my favorite groups of the day was Toy Soliders (pictured below).

Here are some vendors I found especially interesting and original. Most of these artists do custom made orders. Maybe you will fall in love too and support these local artists:

Danielle Marie Tobin Designs
(dmtdesignz@yahoo.com)
Beautiful handcrafted clothes and costumes. She can make clothes for dancers, Halloween, or just everyday wear.

Katie VanVliet
(katie.vanvliet@gmail.com, katevanvliet.blogspot.com (blogging), kvanvliet.etsy.com (selling))
She's a sculptor and printmaker who also makes jewelry and does some amazing things with birth control pills (yes, birth control pills).

Night Owl
(nicwiegand@gmail.com)
Cool retro jewelry and home decor. Earrings with Andie and Duckie + pins with Audrey Hepburn + bowls made from original vinyl = dopeness.

Feather Gun Lab
(feathergunlab@gmail.com)
Artsy duo, Amber and Dresden sell beautiful vintage key and key hole jewelry, silkcreen prints and other crafts.

Samantha Ernst

She can make art out of almost anything and everything. She's relocating to California soon, but she said she hopes to keep a relationship with her clients in the Philly area.
